SUMMARY:

This job level is considered to be a highly skilled position.  An individual is expected to be skillful and productive in the operation of all tools, equipment and machinery in accomplishing their tasks.

 

ESSENTIAL   DUTIES:
Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.  Calculates and sets precision of depth and angle of cut.  Starts and observes welding equipment to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance, and adjusts controls as required. Sets up and tests equipment operation to ensure functionality and performance.  Performs trial run to verify accuracy of fabricating machine settings or programmed control data. Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications.  Installs fabricated pieces for replacement in marine and industrial repair.  Develops written and communication skills as well as leadership skills in supervising other Welders.

 

EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or general education degree (GED) required with eight years of continuos work experience or two years technical graduate major in Welder field and five years continuous work experience.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts.  The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

SPECIFIC SKILLS:

  1. Excellent mathematical skills and some knowledge of chemistry in materials, ferrous & non-ferrous metal (metallurgy).

  2. Knowledgeable in Metrology and instrumentation.

  3. Knowledgeable in cutting designs and their applications.

  4. Design and fabrication of jigs, and fixtures for machining.

  5. Design and set-up jigs and fixtures for line boring.

  6. Able to perform shrink fitting procedures.

  7. Able to maintain and repair machine tools and equipment.

  8. Able to develop specifications from general description and draws sketch of part or product to be fabricated.

  9. Knowledgeable in quality and production control, as well as production cost analysis.
