Marine Mechanic

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

As a Marine and Industrial Mechanic, he/she must be able to analyze and set-up projects with minimal supervision.   Assists in the repair of marine-engine vessels and machinery as well as other industrial projects.  Assists with the disassembly of parts and components, and develops skills to identify the parts and components to be replaced. Must perform all work assignments with good housekeeping and must observe safety precautions at all times. The employer has the right to revise this job description at any time.  The employer also reserves the right to restructure the company organization.  

 

SPECIFIC SKILLS REQUIRED:

 Manipulate properly all the fundamentals hand tools and equipment used in mechanical work.

  1. Perform the basic mechanical processes; theories and principles in bench work operations.

  2. Analyze and interpret blueprints, drawings, and sketches.

  3. Apply basic mathematical skills involved as in conversion of fractions to decimals, conversion of metric to English.

  4. Perform measurements with the use of semi-precision instruments in English or Metric.

  5. Operate properly bench drill, pedestal grinders, hand grinders, power saw, and hydraulic jacks (always with safety precautions).

  6. Disassemble and reassemble basic parts and components, identify parts to be replaced and fabricated.

  7. Operate man lift, forklifts, and overhead cranes as means of lifting, transporting heavy objects.

  8. Assists in the repair of marine engine vessels, and able to remove the following items: pistons, liners, propellers, propeller shafts, cutlass bearings, etc.

  9. Identify the major parts and functions of a ship.

  10. Identify the different grades and sizes of the nuts and bolts used for work.

  11. Must be able to determine tap drill sizes using charts, identify tap sizes and number of threads per inch.

  12. Able to identify the different kinds and series of threads.

  13. Able to sharpen drill bits properly with the required angle of cutting tips.

  14. Must be able to perform drilling and tapping operations.

EDUCATION:

High School Diploma or general education degree (GED) required.  At least one year work experience in the Mechanic Trade or acquired 1,920 Hours of apprenticeship training in Mechanic Technology.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use of hands to finger, handle or feel objects, use of hand and power tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.  Must be able to lift, push and pull at least 50 lbs.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts.  The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
